Sarah Dawn discovered the wonderful world of circus 16 years ago, when a good friend made her her first hula-hoop. That started a lovely journey down the rabbit hole of flow arts, fire dancing, circus, and aerial, which continue to engulf her life with a passionate presence. What once were hobbies are now a lifestyle, as Sarah has become enamored with the aerial arts, as well as the strength, conditioning, flexibility, nutrition, Pilates, yoga, dance, acrobatics, and other elements that she feels complete a well-rounded aerial program.
Over the past 11 years, Sarah has studied aerial under several renowned instructors and schools. In the Bay Area, they included Xochitl Sosa and Kayleigh Stack, and such prestigious schools as as Kinetic Arts and Circus Center. In 2016, she relocated to Boulder, Colorado to attend the Professional Training Program at Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Studio. Sarah is also continually traveling around the US and internationally to further her education at retreats, workshops, and skill shares. She loves cross-pollinating the world with aerial knowledge and passion, inspiring others and sharing all she’s learned. Sarah considers herself a 'vertical girl'...her main focus of training has been on fabric and corde lisse. That being the case, she also has a special place in her heart for the aerial cube, through which her creativity and confidence in the air first blossomed. When it comes to partnering, Sarah has traditionally considered herself a strong base, though recently she's been finding freedom and confidence as a flyer as well.
In the air, Sarah's work can be quite captivating...she presents her art with grace, passion, strength, and a truly emotive presence. However, though she’s had experience performing at festivals around the county and on stage with well-known musicians, Sarah’s main passion lies in teaching. Her favorite moments are when students light up learning a new move, master an elusive skill, or talk about how their life is healthier and happier because of aerial arts. Sarah began her teaching career eight years ago, starting with her own studio in West Oakland, Such Great Heights Aerial Arts, and continuing to teach at studios around the Bay Area and Denver, including Kinetic Arts, Trapeze Arts, The Circus Collective, Frequent Flyers, Live Beyond Limit, and others. Additionally, she's taught guest workshops at studios, retreats, and festivals around the country and abroad.
With a Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing and 15 years of experience as an Emergency Medicine Registered Nurse, Sarah also has a deep understanding of health and wellness, injury assessment and prevention, advanced first aid, and knows how to keep her cool in just about any circumstance. She is interested in not just the artistic side of circus, but also the unique mental and physical effects it has on the body. Health, fluidity, and longevity are her goals in training, and she aims to scientifically incorporate her medical knowledge and experience to achieve these. Additionally, these traits translate well to her aerial teachings, and it is clear to see her care, concern, and confidence while working with students.
